Pan American Unity

Pan American Unity is a massive, twenty-two-foot-tall fresco painted by the celebrated Mexican artist Diego Rivera. Rivera completed this work in 1940 during the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island, where he painted it in public view on a scaffold inside an airplane hangar. The mural is a complex, sprawling masterpiece that fuses ancient Mexican traditions with the industrial machinery of the United States. Its formal title, The Marriage of the Artistic Expression of the North and of the South on this Continent, reflects Rivera's vision of cultural and technological harmony between the Americas.
