Jerry Garcia's first home

This is where Jerry Garcia lived with his grandparents, Tillie and William Clifford, after his father passed away in 1947. During these formative years, the future Grateful Dead frontman roamed this neighborhood with a sense of autonomy that shaped his creative spirit. He attended the nearby Monroe Elementary School, where a dedicated teacher first encouraged him to view his artistic abilities as a viable path in life. The house itself, a modest stucco building, became a sanctuary for young Jerry and eventually inspired his posthumously published autobiographical work titled Harrington Street.
