Alice Chalmers Playground

This playground was named to honor the principal of the neighboring Longfellow Elementary School. While the space occupies only a small fraction of a city block, it gained national attention in 2020 for the installation of a thirty-five-foot tall vertical play tower. This structure was the first of its kind in North America, designed with internal climbing nets that allow children to ascend through three distinct levels before exiting via a corkscrew slide. The design replaced what was previously considered one of the worst-maintained parks in San Francisco with a modern facility inspired by the rugged coastline of the California cliffs.
