Balboa Park - Grass Field

Balboa Park was originally locked away from the public for over two decades due to a jail complex that occupied the site. When the park was first dedicated in 1909, it was part of a massive one-hundred-acre lot known as the House of Refuge. The presence of the Ingleside Jail prevented any real development of the green space until the facility was finally cleared in 1934. Once the jail was removed, the land was split up, and the remaining twenty-five acres were transformed into the recreational hub you see today.
