Mt. Davidson Park

Mount Davidson rises nine hundred thirty-eight feet above sea level, making it the highest natural point in San Francisco. While you stand at this elevation, you are in the midst of a forest that was largely planted by human hands rather than nature. In the eighteen eighties, millionaire and former mayor Adolph Sutro launched a project to plant thousands of tree seedlings across these slopes to promote public health and recreation. He encouraged local schoolchildren to assist in the planting, and the resulting dense groves of eucalyptus, cypress, and pine created a quiet wilderness atmosphere that persists even today within the city.
