St. Francis Wood is a neighborhood built on the philosophy of a residence park, a concept that sought to bring the peace and order of a rural estate into the heart of a bustling city. When developers launched the project in 1912, they employed the Olmsted Brothers, the same firm behind New York City's Central Park, to design a layout defined by wide, curving streets rather than the standard city grid. This design eliminated through-traffic and prioritized a calm, park-like environment where large, detached homes could sit on spacious lots surrounded by mature trees.
