Ramallah Club

The Ramallah Club building at 1951 Ocean Avenue serves as the enduring home for a community that traces its roots to the mountainous Palestinian city of Ramallah. Long before this hall existed, the local immigrant community held its early gatherings in the back rooms of neighborhood grocery stores and private homes. By the mid nineteen fifties, a group of college students and community members began a fundraising drive to secure a permanent space. They eventually raised forty-eight thousand dollars to purchase this site in 1959. Since its remodeling in the early nineteen sixties, the club has functioned as the primary social and cultural anchor for Palestinian-Americans in the Bay Area. It is one of nearly twenty such chapters across the United States that maintain deep ties to their heritage through education, youth programs, and collective community support.
