Peoples Temple in San Francisco

The building that once stood at eighteen fifty-nine Geary Boulevard served as the San Francisco headquarters for the Peoples Temple from nineteen seventy-two until nineteen seventy-seven. Before it became the base for Jim Jones and his congregation, the structure had a history as a Scottish Rite Masonic temple. By the mid-nineteen seventies, this site acted as a central hub for the group's social services, where they provided meals and assistance to neighborhood residents. The location was deeply connected to the Fillmore District, a neighborhood then reeling from the effects of aggressive urban renewal projects that had displaced thousands of people.
