Joseph Conrad Square

landmark

Joseph Conrad Square is a small, triangular park tucked into the intersection where Columbus Avenue meets Beach Street. While you stand here, it is interesting to note that the novelist Joseph Conrad, who spent much of his life as a mariner, likely never visited San Francisco. The square was officially named in his honor in 1979 to coincide with the release of the film Apocalypse Now, which was famously based on his novella Heart of Darkness.
