Installation by Fujiko Nakaya

The pedestrian bridge stretching between Piers 15 and 17 is home to a living, breathing sculpture titled Fog Bridge. Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya created this installation to honor the famous natural fog of San Francisco by simulating it with a high-pressure system. More than 800 nozzles lining the bridge spray atomized water droplets so fine they remain suspended in the air. These droplets are between fifteen and twenty microns in diameter, making them nearly identical in composition to the thick, rolling mist that frequently blankets the Bay. When the system activates, it transforms the walkway into a disorienting, immersive cloud that momentarily erases the surrounding architecture and leaves visitors standing in a self-contained, white void.
