Pier 31

Pier 31 was built between 1917 and 1918 as part of the massive expansion of the San Francisco waterfront. It features an exceptionally wide bulkhead building that was designed to connect directly with the adjacent structure at Pier 29. When it was completed, the transit shed on the pier became one of the first in the city to incorporate a series of roof skylights, a deliberate engineering choice meant to flood the interior with natural daylight for the laborers working inside.
