Saints Peter and Paul Church, often called the Italian Cathedral of the West, stands as a dominant landmark in North Beach. Its twin spires, which rise one hundred and ninety-one feet into the sky, have served as a symbol of the neighborhood for generations. The current structure was completed in nineteen twenty-four, replacing an original wooden church at Filbert and Grant that was destroyed during the Great San Francisco Earthquake and fire of nineteen zero six.
