Keystone Korner

Keystone Korner, once located at seven hundred fifty Vallejo Street, served as a vital sanctuary for jazz during an era when many other clubs across the country were closing their doors. Its name originated from a local play on words, referencing the Keystone Cops who were stationed at the Central Police Station just across the alley. Before it gained international renown as a premier jazz venue, the space functioned as a topless bar, only pivoting to live music after a songwriter suggested the change to the owner. The club eventually earned the nickname the Birdland of the seventies because of the caliber of legendary musicians it attracted to its intimate stage.
