Pier 38

Pier 38 was constructed between 1908 and 1909 as a vital piece of the city's maritime infrastructure. Built during a period of rapid expansion for the Port of San Francisco, the structure served as a utilitarian transit shed designed to handle the heavy cargo that powered the local economy. It remains part of the Embarcadero National Register Historic District, which preserves the collection of finger piers and bulkheads that defined the city's interface with the bay for much of the twentieth century.
