Grace Marchant Garden

The Grace Marchant Garden exists today because one woman decided to reclaim a hillside from a mountain of urban refuse. When Grace Marchant moved to this corner of Telegraph Hill in nineteen forty-nine, the area along the Filbert Steps was an informal dump filled with old tires, bedsprings, and discarded furniture. She gained official permission to clear the site, and she eventually lit a massive bonfire to burn away the debris, a blaze that reportedly lasted for three days. Over the next thirty-three years, she personally hauled in soil and planted flowers, turning the barren slope into a lush, terraced oasis that remains a centerpiece of the neighborhood.
