The house at 1254–1256 Montgomery Street stands on a secondary summit of Telegraph Hill that was once the location of a landmark windmill. Known as Hudson's Windmill, the structure appeared in lithographs as early as 1851 before it likely burned down in a large fire on July 4, 1861. Construction of the current residence began shortly after the fire, originally as a single-story rooming house intended to be expanded upward.
