Pioneer Park

Pioneer Park sits at the very summit of Telegraph Hill. Its existence today is the direct result of a powerful storm in the nineteenth century. Before the park was established, the hilltop was occupied by a marine signal station that alerted the city to incoming ships. In eighteen seventy, a violent storm destroyed the station, leaving the land vacant and vulnerable to commercial development. To prevent the hilltop from being transformed into private property, a group of influential businessmen purchased the land and donated it to the city in eighteen seventy-six. They stipulated that the site must be preserved as a public space to mark the centennial of the United States.
