Julia Morgan Building

The Julia Morgan Building at thirty-four hundred Laguna Street is a striking example of Jacobethan Revival architecture that has served as a care home for an entire century. Commissioned by the San Francisco Ladies Protection and Relief Society, the structure opened its doors in nineteen twenty-five on land that was originally donated following the nineteen fifteen World's Fair. Its brick facade and slate roof are accented with intricate terracotta details, including Tudor rose motifs chosen to symbolize themes of love and protection. The building was constructed with reinforced concrete to provide superior earthquake resilience, a design hallmark of the architect who famously pioneered the use of this material following the devastation of nineteen zero six. Today, it operates as the centerpiece of a retirement community known as Heritage on the Marina.
