The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial stretches across seven and a half acres, defined by four outdoor galleries of red South Dakota granite. Each room represents one of Roosevelt's terms in office. Visitors walk past cascading waterfalls that increase in volume and complexity as they move through the site. When sculptor Robert Graham designed the bronze figure of Roosevelt in his wheelchair, he faced intense debate over whether to hide or highlight the President's disability, ultimately choosing to place him in plain view.
