Enid A. Haupt Garden

The Enid A. Haupt Garden is a four-acre rooftop garden sitting directly atop the National Museum of African Art and the Sackler Gallery. Beneath the flowerbeds and paths lie these two massive, underground Smithsonian museums. In the nineteen eighties, the area was a barren, fenced-off space between the Arts and Industries Building and the Independence Avenue traffic. Enid Haupt, a philanthropist and avid gardener, provided the funding to transform this patch of dirt into a Victorian-style parterre filled with magnolias and iron gates.
