General Marquis de Lafayette Statue

The bronze Marquis de Lafayette stands atop his marble pedestal in the center of Dupont Circle, gesturing toward the horizon with his hat in hand. Dedicated in nineteen ninety-one, this sculpture replaces an earlier version that stood here for decades before being moved. It commemorates the French general who served in the American Revolution. During his final visit to Washington in eighteen twenty-four, a crowd of thousands gathered to cheer his carriage as he traveled past this very spot on his way to the White House.
