The yellow brick facade of Decatur House sits on the corner of Lafayette Square, separated from the White House by only a few hundred feet. Completed in eighteen nineteen for naval hero Stephen Decatur, the mansion served as a prime location for the city's social and political elite. Decatur spent only fourteen months here before he died in a duel, but his home remained a centerpiece of Washington life, later housing three secretaries of state and the first diplomatic legation of the Texas Republic.
