Carter G. Woodson National Historic Site

The Carter G. Woodson home is a three-story brick row house on Ninth Street with a bright red front door. Between nineteen fifteen and nineteen fifty, Woodson operated the Association for the Study of African American Life and History from these rooms. He edited the Journal of Negro History at his desk here, often working through the night to document lives omitted from academic texts. In nineteen twenty-six, he launched Negro History Week from this base, the direct precursor to Black History Month.
