The jagged, faux-stalactite ceiling hanging over the basement stage at eleventh and U Street identifies the Bohemian Caverns. It opened in nineteen twenty-six as the Crystal Caverns, designed to mimic a subterranean cave system. Duke Ellington played here, and later, the club hosted legends like Miles Davis and John Coltrane during the height of the jazz era. When the venue shuttered in the late sixties, the cavernous interior was boarded up for decades until renovations revealed the original, bizarre rock-like plaster formations.
