The Industrial Bank building features a sharp, limestone-clad corner that cuts into the intersection like the prow of a ship. Jesse Mitchell opened this bank in nineteen thirty-four, during the deepest part of the Great Depression, specifically to serve African American families and businesses that were routinely turned away by white-owned financial institutions. Mitchell kept the bank open through the height of the riots in nineteen sixty-eight, even as other businesses on the block burned or shuttered their doors permanently.
