Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

park garden

The Martin Luther King Junior Memorial features a massive thirty-foot sculpture of Doctor King emerging from a slab of white granite. It stands directly on the edge of the Tidal Basin, where the stone seems to split apart as if forced open by his presence. Sculptor Lei Yixin carved the figure from one hundred and fifty-nine individual blocks of granite, a design choice intended to evoke the Mountain of Despair described in King's famous I Have a Dream speech.
