D.C. World War I Memorial

The District of Columbia War Memorial stands as a circular, neoclassical temple of white Vermont marble, distinguished by its twelve massive Doric columns. Unlike the other major monuments on the National Mall, this structure honors only the residents of Washington who served in the First World War. When it was dedicated in nineteen thirty-one, the twenty-six thousand veterans of the city marched from the Peace Monument to this site, reclaiming a memorial they had fought for years to build.
