The Elbridge G. Keith house stands out in the Prairie District for its heavy, rusticated limestone base and the expansive arched windows along its facade. Built in eighteen seventy-one, it survived the Great Chicago Fire because it sat just outside the fire zone, serving as a sanctuary for displaced neighbors. Elbridge Keith made his fortune in wholesale groceries, but the house earned a permanent place in local lore when it became the first residence in the neighborhood to install electricity.
