The Wheeler Mansion

The Wheeler Mansion stands out because it is one of the few survivors of a vanished neighborhood. While the houses around it burned in the great fire or were demolished for commercial high-rises, this limestone residence held its ground. It was built in eighteen seventy for George Wheeler, a successful hardware merchant who wanted his home to reflect his status during the city's reconstruction. He hired an architect to design a French Second Empire house that has outlived almost every neighbor he once knew.
