North River Tunnels for AMTRAK and NJTransit

The North River Tunnels beneath your feet represent a colossal feat of engineering that permanently altered how people travel into New York City. Before these twin tubes opened in nineteen ten, the Pennsylvania Railroad relied entirely on ferry boats to move passengers across the Hudson River from New Jersey. By boring through the soft riverbed silt, engineers created the first direct, all-weather rail connection to Manhattan. This project effectively integrated New York into the national rail network, allowing trains to pull directly into Pennsylvania Station instead of terminating on the New Jersey waterfront.
