Duck Library

The Duck Library is a whimsical community installation, typically appearing as a small, brightly colored box mounted to a sign pole in the Chelsea neighborhood. It operates on a simple, playful premise inspired by community book-sharing projects: you are invited to take a rubber duck or leave one behind for another passerby to discover. This project began as a spontaneous urban trend after an anonymous local started placing small toy ducks on neighborhood railings to brighten people's days. A local dog walker named JJ Cerillo eventually encountered this mysterious benefactor, received their blessing to join the mission, and helped formalize the concept into these distinct, monitored boxes. These libraries serve as centers of micro-community, where children and adults alike engage in a miniature scavenger hunt that turns a routine walk through Chelsea into a moment of shared, unexpected delight.
