High Line Observation Deck

You are walking toward one of the most distinctive vantage points of the High Line, a project that transformed a dangerous industrial relic into a public park. Before this was a promenade, the structure carried freight trains directly through factories and warehouses to avoid the street-level rail tracks below. Those street-level tracks became so lethal to pedestrians that the intersection of Tenth Avenue earned the grim nickname Death Avenue. To solve the problem, the city elevated the tracks, and trains began running through the air in nineteen thirty-four, allowing them to deliver meat, dairy, and produce without obstructing traffic.
