The Altman Building

The building you are approaching was constructed in eighteen ninety-six as the private carriage house for the B. Altman and Company department store. Architects Kimball and Thompson designed this Renaissance Revival structure to serve the logistics of a Gilded Age retail empire. It features tall, mahogany bay doors that were once essential for the movement of horse-drawn carriages carrying fine merchandise to and from the store. Today, those same historic doors open into a venue that retains its industrial heritage through exposed vaulted brick ceilings and hardwood floors.
