Atlantic Garden

The Atlantic Garden stood for over half a century as the epicenter of German social life in New York City. Established in 1858 by Wilhelm Kramer at 50 Bowery, it functioned as a grand beer hall and concert venue that could accommodate two thousand guests at a time. It became famous for its massive mechanical organ, an orchestration that mimicked the sound of a full orchestra and drew crowds from across the city to hear popular music and variety acts. Beyond its role as a social hub, the establishment served as a recruiting station for German regiments during the Civil War. When patrons of the neighboring theater wanted a break during a performance, they could use a private passageway to quickly slip into the Garden for a drink and a bite to eat.
