Eugene McCabe Field

Eugene McCabe Field is a tribute to a man who transformed healthcare access in this neighborhood. Eugene Louis McCabe founded North General Hospital in nineteen seventy-nine, creating the only minority-operated community teaching hospital in the state of New York at that time. He was a central figure in local civic life, using his background in political science and transit planning to secure major state funding that revitalized this section of East Harlem. Before this space was named for him in two thousand one, it was known simply as the playground for Public School seventy-nine.
