Glen Span Arch

Glen Span Arch acts as a quiet gateway to the Ravine, the most secluded woodland landscape in the northern section of the park. When it was completed in eighteen sixty-five, the structure was significantly different than it appears today. It originally featured wooden trestles and railings that carried the carriage drive overhead. These wooden elements proved unable to withstand the elements and were replaced in eighteen eighty-five by the rugged, light-gray gneiss stone you see now. This transformation turned what was once a temporary-looking wooden crossing into a permanent, massive stone portal that helps maintain the illusion of a deep, untouched forest.
