As you approach 80 Saint Marks Place, look down at the sidewalk. You are standing before a local version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Since 1971, stars of the stage and screen have been invited to leave their handprints, footprints, and signatures in the wet concrete outside the entrance. The tradition began with legendary performers like Joan Crawford, who signed her name with such fervor she nearly ran out of space, and Gloria Swanson, who left her mark just as the venue was establishing itself as a cultural anchor in what was then a struggling neighborhood.
