Love Is Love mural

The Love Is Love mural in East Williamsburg emerged in June 2019 as a vibrant tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Painted by the veteran New York graffiti artist Jonathan Cohen, widely known as Meres One, the work was commissioned as part of the WorldPride Mural Project. Cohen utilized his signature color-drenched style, incorporating his famous light bulb icon to symbolize bright ideas and creative energy. The mural serves as a declarative statement on acceptance and the fundamental right to love, intentionally designed to echo the classic aesthetic of a postcard. This choice of style was meant to evoke a sense of nostalgia for an earlier version of New York City, prioritizing a message of human connection in an era the artist saw as increasingly difficult and divided.
