Schermerhorn Row, South Street Seaport Museum

Schermerhorn Row began as an ambitious commercial enterprise in eighteen eleven, when merchant Peter Schermerhorn envisioned a unified block of counting-houses to dominate the bustling East River waterfront. These buildings functioned as a complete logistical hub for the shipping trade, seamlessly combining storefronts, offices, and massive warehouse spaces under one roof. Each floor featured internal hoistways, allowing merchants to move cargo with an efficiency that made this block the primary engine of New York City’s maritime prosperity. At the time of its completion, it stood as the largest commercial development in the city.
