The site where you are standing marks a turning point in how New Yorkers live. This was the location of the Stuyvesant Apartments, completed in 1870 as the first apartment building in the city specifically designed for the middle class. Before this building rose, New Yorkers of means almost exclusively lived in private townhouses or mansions, while shared buildings were reserved for the city's poorest residents.
