Father Jerzy Popieluszko Square

This square honors Father Jerzy Popieluszko, a Roman Catholic priest who became a central figure of the Polish Solidarity movement during the communist era. He famously used his pulpit in Warsaw to advocate for human rights and Polish independence, frequently supporting striking factory workers by celebrating Mass for them on-site. His vocal opposition to the regime led to his abduction and murder by security officers in nineteen eighty-four, an event that ignited global outcry and solidified his role as a martyr for freedom. In nineteen eighty-five, just one year after his death, the New York City Council officially designated this site in Greenpoint in his honor, reflecting the neighborhood's deep connection to the Polish struggle for liberation.
