Sgt. William Dougherty Playground

This playground honors William Dougherty, a local Brooklyn resident who grew up playing on these very streets. He served as a sergeant with the one hundred sixty-fifth Infantry Regiment during the Second World War. Dougherty lost his life in July of nineteen forty-four while fighting in the Battle of Saipan. The city named this site in his memory four years later, in nineteen forty-eight, to recognize his sacrifice and his deep connection to this corner of the borough.
