Penny Bridge

The name Penny Bridge stems from an act of the state legislature in eighteen hundred and three that authorized a private toll bridge across Newtown Creek. Pedestrians paid a single penny to cross the span, and the informal nickname persisted long after the original wooden structure was replaced by more modern designs. You are standing near the former terminus of this crossing, which once served as a primary transit route connecting Greenpoint to Laurel Hill in Queens.
