The ground beneath your feet holds the largest underground oil spill in United States history. Unlike a singular accident, this disaster is a hidden, century-long accumulation of petroleum leaking from refineries that once lined the banks of Newtown Creek. Estimates suggest between seventeen and thirty million gallons of oil have saturated the soil and groundwater here, a volume significantly larger than the infamous Exxon Valdez spill.
