The name San Damiano in Greenpoint refers to the San Damiano Mission, which occupies a historic red brick building nearby. The structure was originally built in nineteen eleven as the Holy Family Church to serve the neighborhood’s growing population of Slovak immigrants. Its architecture reflects the Romanesque Revival style, featuring a distinctive verdigris dome and arched windows that stand out against the industrial character of the surrounding blocks.
