Paradise Garage

The Paradise Garage was built specifically around the vision and sound of its resident DJ, Larry Levan. While most clubs of the era prioritized glitz and celebrity, this venue functioned as a dedicated temple to music. The building featured a massive sound system designed by Richard Long, which was tuned twice a week to achieve perfect clarity. The dance floor itself was a feat of engineering, constructed with springs and cushioning underneath the wood to protect the bodies of dancers who often stayed in motion for twelve hours or more. This obsessive focus on the physical experience of sound helped redefine the role of the DJ, transforming the person behind the booth from a mere record-player into a central creator of the evening.
