Bristol Basin

historic

You are standing on a piece of ground with a very literal connection to England. The land beneath your feet at Bristol Basin consists largely of rubble from the city of Bristol, which was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. When American supply ships crossed the Atlantic to deliver aid, they returned to New York with empty hulls that required heavy material to maintain stability. Builders used this debris as ballast, bringing the remains of ruined English homes across the ocean to serve as landfill for this section of the Kips Bay shoreline.
