Colors (restaurant)

Colors restaurant was conceived as a living memorial to the employees of Windows on the World, the celebrated restaurant that sat atop the North Tower of the World Trade Center. When that establishment was destroyed during the September 11 terrorist attacks, it took the lives of seventy-three staff members and left many survivors unemployed. In 2006, the nonprofit Restaurant Opportunities Center helped those displaced workers launch Colors, a cooperative restaurant intended to provide a workspace where survivors could rebuild their livelihoods and showcase their diverse culinary backgrounds. The original menu drew from the family recipes of the international staff, representing the wide array of cultures that had defined the workforce at the Twin Towers.
