Stanton Street Synagogue

The Stanton Street Synagogue stands as one of the very few surviving tenement synagogues in New York City. At the turn of the twentieth century, hundreds of these intimate, small-scale houses of worship were shoehorned into narrow lots across the Lower East Side to serve immigrant communities from specific European towns. While most were eventually demolished or converted into residential or commercial spaces, this three-story brick and stone building has remained an active place of prayer since its construction in nineteen thirteen. Its design reflects the necessity of its time, incorporating two older structures from the eighteen forties into a single, compact site that measures only twenty feet wide.
