Graybar Building

The Graybar Building stands as a monumental anchor of Terminal City, a vast urban project constructed directly over the active underground railroad tracks of Grand Central Terminal. Completed in nineteen twenty-seven, this thirty-story Art Deco tower was designed to utilize valuable air rights, effectively floating its massive frame above the train platforms. To manage the immense vibration from the trains below, engineers embedded sheets of lead within the building’s concrete foundations, acting as a massive shock absorber for the structure. This engineering foresight allowed for stable, high-grade office space in a location that otherwise seemed impossible to develop.
